Gugu Mbatha-Raw: Beyond the Lights to An Untamed State

Gugu Mbatha-Raw

You may know Gugu Mbatha-Raw from Beyond the Lights, but she has had many roles and will be reuniting with director, Gina Prince-Bythewood for An Untamed State.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw started her career at a local acting group when she was only eleven and appeared in the pantomime at Oxford Playhouse every year.  Gugu is also a talented singer and plays the saxophone as well as being a dancer.  No wonder Mbatha-Raw was so perfect for Beyond the Lights as she was able to record songs written by the Dream for the film.  Gugu Mbatha-Raw also used her dance background and had intense dance training from choreographer, Laurieann Gibson.  It was a great film that was about a singer who attempts suicide as she is so unhappy with being forced into portraying a singer with a very sexual persona by her mother who is her aggressive and overbearing manager. I would recommend you see the movie if you missed it.

An Untamed State brings Gugu Mbatha-Raw and director Gina Prince-Bythewood together and it should be a magical team.  Beyond the Lights received an Oscar nomination and excellent reviews.  The film is produced by Michael De Luca via his eponymous production company set up at Universal.  An Untamed State is an adaptation of Roxane Gay’s debut novel.  The story sounds intense as it is about a Haitian American woman who is kidnapped for ransom in front of her husband and child.

Get ready for Gugu Mbatha-Raw who will be seen in Matthew McConaughey’s, Free State of Jones and of course the highly anticipated update of Beauty and the Beast for 2017 which is live action.  The Concussion actress plays Plumette.  She will be singing which she is excited about.  Gugu told E-News, “A lot of my character is animated so I was only on set a couple of days, but they were magical days. I mean, we were in London and you’ve got Ewan McGregor as my dance partner and we’re ballroom dancing around this Disney ballroom!” She went on to say the movie is, “everything you’ll expect and more.” Gugu Mbatha-Raw added, “It’s got all the magic and the romance of the original, but it’s also very funny.”

All of her films sounds great.  It’s great that Gugu has a variety of upcoming roles. Will you be watching Gugu Mbatha-Raw from Beyond the Lights or one of her new ventures?
