Lisa Sugar has an amazing job. She manages a successful company, all while being a wife and mother of three daughters. How did she turn her love of pop culture into a career?
In her first book, Power Your Happy, she shares her personal and business story and gives advice in true POPSUGAR style! And makes it all seem achievable.
Lisa grew up outside of Washington, D.C. and attended George Washington University. She’s always been good with giving advice to friends yet felt she was never really good at anything. After college, she moved to New York City.
“Don’t decide what you want to do with your life; let your life tell you what your path is,” says Lisa.
Lisa knew she wanted to write; writing as much and as fast as she could. She also recognized there wasn’t a magazine or website that provided real-time celebrity news, fashion, beauty, advice, tips – and while having humor. So, she let her husband Brian build a website, she learned basic coding, and started writing. What started as a side project soon had a following.
POPSUGAR began in 2005 in the pre-social media and post-blog world. By 2006, it had a founding team of eight. “You have to put in the work and be grateful for the learning experience, because even if you think you are too good…you can always find something to take away from it,” explains Lisa.
Starting at the bottom meant doing everything on her own. She woke up early to write and staying up late was more of a struggle. However, dedication always pays off. As a result of consistent hard work, POPSUGAR exploded and today has 500 employees.
Power Your Happy reminds us that we each have a passion within us. You may not be aware of what that is, but it is your job to find that out.
Running a company can be difficult, but Lisa Sugar leaves herself open to new challenges and doesn’t stay boxed in a comfort zone. Part of that is staying flexible and figuring out what works for you.
Lisa believes, “Life shouldn’t be divided into the work period and the fun period. As much as you can, make every day count.”
Another piece to being happy is feeling good about yourself. Have a genuine smile on your face, stand up straight and look at ease with yourself. Confidence manifests itself in eye contact and good posture.
Lisa Sugar wants to inspire women to feel self-confident and not let anything hold them back. She knew right away that POPSUGAR would be a safe place for all women. Specifically, there are no stories about weight or other related topics.
Lisa feels, “I try to find moments of peace during the day when I can calm by brain…I also believe that every day we should all genuinely say “thank you” to someone. All the exercise and healthy eating in the world can only do so much if you don’t prioritize your happiness.”
