It’s my favorite time of year! Well, my favorite time of the year for comedy. Saturday Night Live is back!!!
Through all of its ups and downs, SNL has provided 42 years of comedic commentary, pop culture influence and some incredible figures in entertainment. I am so excited that season 42 has begun! It seems like this is going to be a solid year for SNL. Here are some of my favorite highlights from the first two episodes:
Season 42-Episode 1-Margot Robbie
I was so relieved when SNL came back because I just needed to laugh about this election cycle. SNL provided me that outlet and indicated a season full of hysterical political commentary. Kate McKinnon reprised her role of Hilary Clinton, while the seasoned Alec Baldwin provided a spot on impression of Trump.
Family Feud Political Edition:
One of the most well-known attributes of SNL is their impressions. This was basically a free-for-all of impressions and brilliant one-liners. It proved to the audience that there are endless possibilities for comedy in this election cycle.
Weekend Update Guest: Cathy Anne
I was watching this character sketch in public and it was extremely difficult keeping my laughter under control. I think we all have met a Cathy Anne in life and the silliness of this character is something I did not know I needed until I watched it. Thank-you, Cecily Strong!
Season 42-Episode 2-Lin Manuel Miranda
I know, the Cold Open is a highlight again, but SNL needs some serious props for this cold open. The video of Trump’s sexual assault remarks was leaked on FRIDAY. SNL already has most of its material done by Friday. That meant that there was a lot of scrapping material and writing new material, with only around 48 hours to do so.
Crucible Cast Party:
Lin-Manuel Miranda brought in the highest second episode ratings in 18 years. I can tell you why. Because THEATRE KIDS STICK TOGETHER, but seriously, theatre-makers love being represented on television and in film, so having a Broadway star host SNL was really exciting. Naturally, there would be a sketch that referenced Miranda’s theatre background. This sketch not only captured a highschool cast party, it also captured what it felt like to be a teenager. The line, “I’m going to steal his hat and just sort of walk around” particularly rang true of my highschool experience.
Covering one of the most popular shows of the summer is a no-brainer for SNL. From genius impressions to series commentating to even social commentary, this sketch was golden.
I’ve been watching SNL religiously since 2009. Season 42 has all the signs of being a good season. Her Daily will be covering each episode of SNL! I can’t wait to expound my thoughts on each episode and I hope you’ll enjoy the articles. What are your predictions for Season 42?
