Five Celebrities and Their Experiences with Abortion

The fight for women to have control over their bodies is no where near being over but has seen some strides recently with the beginning of the #WholeWomensHealth Supreme Court Case. Women have to know that they have options whether they want to use them or not. Hearing about the experiences of women who have gone through the procedure is also important to note since everyone has different reasons for making the choice to have an abortion. Check out what these women have to say about their choice.

Lil’ Kim

Reports have been going around for quite some that Lil’ Kim got an abortion after becoming pregnant by Biggie Smalls. She told The Breakfast Club (Skip to 36:10) that the rumors were true and she was pregnant. “I don’t know if I have regrets about not keeping it. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t. But then I’d say, what would happen to my career,” said Lil’ Kim.

Jemima Kirke

Kirke says she had an abortion in 2007 but didn’t want to ask her mother for financial help in terminating the pregnancy. As a result she had the procedure done without anesthesia. “My life was just not conducive to raising a healthy, happy child. I just didn’t feel it was fair,” said Kirke. “I have two daughters actually, I have a stepdaughter who’s 8 and I have my younger one who is 4…so I would love for when they’re older, in their teens [or] in their 20s, that the political issues surrounding their bodies were not there anymore. They have one less thing to battle around their bodies.”

Margaret Cho

Margaret Cho talked to XO Jane about how women should be discussing abortions. “I talk a lot about abortion and people get really freaked out. I’m not even making a political statement,” said Cho. “I’m just talking about what happened! I have had them and I want to talk about them. I don’t care what your views are toward abortion, I just think women should be talking about it.”

Sharon Osbourne

Sharon Osbourne told the Daily Mail that her abortion was one of the worst experiences of her life and she believes its the reason she had miscarriages in the future. “I had an abortion at 17 and it was the worst thing I ever did. It was the first time I’d had sex, and that was rotten. I’d always thought it was going to be all violins, and it was just awful.” Osbourne recounts her mother being angry and telling her to “get rid of it.”

Nicki Minaj

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Nicki Minaj said her abortion was the hardest thing she had to go through. Despite her having a hard time with the decision, Minaj is still pro-choice. “It’d be contradictory if I said I wasn’t pro-choice. I wasn’t ready. I didn’t have anything to offer a child,” said Minaj.
