4 Healthy Reasons To Snack On Bananas

bananas

The popular fruit has a lot of health benefits that you may or may not know about. Here’s a few of them.

1)  Bananas can help with your mood.  Feeling down?  Bananas have actually been proven to help with your emotional state.  A lot of people say it helps combat depression, and while that’s not true, it can help provide your body with the chemical serotonin.  This chemical is thought to help one’s mood.  Bananas can help provide this, and while it won’t solve depression, they can help your body have the tools it needs to start to combat it.

2)  Bananas can help your blood sugar levels.  It is often recommended to eat bananas before working out, or even help relieve some PMS symptoms because of the fact that bananas are a good way to regulate your blood sugar.  They’re also a healthy snack for diabetic patients, so long as people with diabetes take the carbs into consideration as they’re planning their snacks.

3)  Bananas are high in fiber.  If you are a bit constipated, bananas can really help combat that.  Since the fruit is high in fiber, they’re great for your digestive track.  About 70 percent of a banana’s fiber is insoluble fiber.  Insoluble fiber doesn’t dissolve in liquid and helps your food go through your tract with no issues.

4)  Bananas are high in potassium.  Did you know that humans need 4,700 milligrams of potassium daily?  A large banana can provide you with 500 of those daily needed milligrams.  Potassium is extremely important to how your bowels work, and is needed so that they function properly.

Now you can see why this fruit is fantastic, plus it taste good, anyway.  But did you know that we could be losing this healthy and important fruit?  Currently, the banana plant that we eat is susceptible to a deadly disease called “Panama Disease”, and because of this illness infecting the fruit, we could lose the banana entirely.  You can watch an excellent video about it from YouTube’s SciShow or YouTube’s The Good Stuff.  Both explain what the disease is and how scientists are combating the issue in order for us to keep the banana in our stores and in our diets.

For now, if you want to be a tad healthier today, pick up a banana to snack on.
